SUMMARY:Vice & Grit in the "Roaring Third" Cleveland Stories Dinner Party!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on my new book! \nOver 100 years ago\, a Cleveland newspaper headline declared: “100 Police Mop Up ‘Roaring Third.'” It was 1926\, the heart of Prohibition\, and the nickname stuck. The “Third” was Cleveland’s old Third Police Precinct\, a stretch of the near east side. The name was a clever play on “the Roaring Twenties\,” the era’s own nickname for jazz\, nightlife\, and excess. But while the rest of the nation left that decade behind and slid into the Depression\, Cleveland’s Third just kept on roaring. \nThis neighborhood was a study in contradictions. Millionaires’ Row\, where John D. Rockefeller once lived\, sat just blocks from bootlegging\, corruption\, and vice so bad the city hired Eliot Ness to fight it. The ravines at its southern edge hid one of the most horrifying unsolved crime sprees in American history — the Kingsbury Run murders. Families\, immigrants and Great Migration arrivals alike\, were packed into deteriorating and overcrowded homes. Freeways later cut the neighborhood in half. Suburban flight finished what neglect started. \nThis was also home to music that shaped a nation — jazz\, blues\, and later Motown\, played in small clubs by some of the greatest artists this country ever produced. Home to Langston Hughes\, who walked these streets to high school and later developed his plays at Karamu House\, the oldest producing Black theater in America. Home to Carl Stokes\, who rose out of this neighborhood to become the first Black mayor of a major American city. \nThis one’s for everyone who called the Third home — and everyone who wants to understand how this city became what it is.
