House Detective: Uncovering the Hidden History of Your Home

Who built your house? Who lived there before you? What stood on your lot before the house went up?

Every property in Cuyahoga County has a history, and most of it can be found if you know where to look. I will walk you through the resources to trace the story of a home and the land it sits on, from free online tools to records most people never think to check.

You’ll learn how to use property and tax records, building permits, city directories, Sanborn fire insurance maps, and historic newspapers to build a timeline of your home. I will also share where to find hard-to-locate photographs and newspaper accounts that can bring the people who lived there back to life.

Whether you live in a century home in the city or a postwar ranch in the suburbs, you’ll leave with a clear plan for researching your own property.
