The Assassin Next Door

Author Tom Kashalk wrote about President McKinley’s assassin, Leon Frank Czolgosz, in the September 30, , 2026 edition of The Neighborhood News (page 4).

This particular corner is where a young immigrant attended anarchist meetings, gathering in a hall above the saloon his own father ran downstairs. A few blocks away,on what’s now Fleet Avenue, stood the house where his
family lived. Peel back the layers of this small corner of Slavic Village, and you find the family of the man who killed a president.

I learned that the assassin had lived in what’s now Slavic Village on a walking tour led by Glenn Sobola of the Slavic Village Historical Society, past a stretch of East 65th Street I’d driven and walked by hundreds of times myself without ever suspecting the history buried there.
